What's new? Most everything.
Welcome to my little corner of the world. This site is a dumping ground for stuff found in my life and brain; things that interest me. Perhaps they'll interest someone else too. The site framework is pretty much complete. It's all validated xhtml, css, php and javascript. Some the code used in building this site will be posted in the tools section. I doubt I'll ever win a design contest, but I think the site is now at least readable and navigable. It's about the content, damn it! Speaking of content, next up on my do list is to add some more photos to the Rockies '07 galleries. I also intend to post some more helpful tools (maybe my set of mp3 library management scripts, the menu system used on this site, a few other goodies). Ah, the best laid plans....

Well, I installed XP Service Pack 3 last night. What a disaster! Shortly after the reboot, windows exporer crashed, followed shortly thereafter by a Dr. Watson crash as it tried to deal with Explorer. But that's not the worst of it. Since the install my local Apache server is working sporadically at best. Now sometimes it serves up empty pages, sometimes it serves the page, but not images and not css, and sometimes it serves everything just fine. This goes in waves. It will work for a while, then break for a while, then start working again. This behaviour is unaffected by restarts and reboots. And Microsoft's own Virtual PC will no longer start any virtual machines, saying "The virtual machine could not be restored because there was not enough memory available on the host". (There's plenty of memory on the host.) SP3??? Just say NO.

It's been all floatbox focussed for the last month. This latest version - v2.35 - most likely really is it, except for minor tweaks and bug fixes that might come up. It's rock solid and does exactly what I want it to now. But more importantly, I'm tiring of the project. It's time to move on to something else. Hmmm, maybe like playing outside in the springtime.

Updated Floatbox with a few bug fixes and enhancements.
I've got the screen measurements and positioning nailed now. I'll put some pages up soon detailing my findings and techniques in this regard.
This version (2.20) is likely to be the last floatbox update for a while.

Re-themed the Rockies '07 galleries with red-rock-ish framework bits. I think it might be a little bit ugly and I may swap it out again some lazy day.

New version of Floatbox released. Comments & feedback page added for floatbox.

Floatbox is production ready and available. It was a lot more work than I set out to do, but I'm pleased with the end result.

Well, I haven't heard from the lytebox guy, so I'm going my own way with my own clone. I'm doing this basically because I'm
enjoying the project and learning a lot from it. So far the enhancements made are wrapping of galleries and slideshows,
smoother resizing, automatic vertical positioning and a smaller code footprint. Next up is to smooth the fade in/outs in
the same manner as was done for the resizing. I also want to try an alternate method of animation that does not rely on timers.
I think I can get them ultimately smooth that way, but I won't know until I try.
I hereby christen this lytebox clone "floatbox". My objectives for this project are to keep the code size to an efficient
minimum, make it as robust as I can, and keep it easy to deploy and use. Once I get the new version of fading in
(and fix a couple of minor bugs) I'll post a downloadable version and a few instructions for deployment.

Happy New Year!
I've been working hard on some updates and modifications to the excellent Javascript based Lytebox gallery viewer.
You can see this tool in action in the galleries.
Once I talk about the changes with the author we'll either see the mods added to his version, or I'll post my changed version
here in case others are interested. (I'd rather merge the changes and have one source (for someone else) to worry about.)

Photo galleries from my 2007 motorbike trip through the Rockies and Utah are now available for your viewing pleasure.

A few floatboxed galleries from Thailand 02-03. are up, and looking good.

The first significant content is now in place: Thailand travel tales from 2002-2003 and 2006. From a technical standpoint, I like the 02-03 tales because they've got the way-cool popup thumbnails and floatboxed linked images.
Cheers...
